15 May, 2017, Port Vila: Vanuatu Tourism Office (VTO) welcomes the news that the Vanuatu Government officially signed the contract for phase two of the Port Vila’s Bauerfield International Airport rehabilitation works on Friday 12 May, 2017.

The project, which will commence in July, is set to modernise Vanuatu’s main gateway, whilst also extending the runway to be able to accommodate larger aircraft and welcome more visitors to the region. The airport will continue to operate throughout the construction period.

VTO’s general manager, Adela Issachar Aru said the commencement of this phase of the runway redevelopment is a positive step for the Vanuatu industry and will lead to vast expansion of the industry across the board.

“Better airport infrastructure will allow us to welcome more tourists and delegates from our key markets, including Australia, but by also being able to cater for larger aircraft we can open our doors and our arms to many more guests from around the world,” Ms Aru said.

“There is so much scope for further investment and sustainable tourism growth in Vanuatu and we’re thrilled this next important step has been taken by the Vanuatu Government.”

Contracted developers, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and its joint venture partner North West Civil Airport Construction Group, have advised that the World Bank funded project is set to be completed around April 2018. Further negotiations are also underway for upgrades to Tanna’s Whitegrass International Airport and Espiritu Santo’s Pekoa International Airport.
