COLLAR THE DOG – MOUNTAIN BIKE EVENT – MALEKULA 2017

Collar the Dog – a mountain bike adventure on Malekula Island is being launch in May 2017. The first of its kind in Vanuatu this is a mountain bike ride, not a race, around the northern head of the Malekula Island known as the “Head of the Dog”. The trail combines riding through spectacular coastal scenery with the rich cultural and heritage aspects of Malekula.

The inaugural launch event for the new trail runs over the first three weeks of May 2017. Dates are 3-5 May, 10-12 May, and 17-19 May. Collar the Dog is fully supported with back-up vehicles, catering, accommodation, and guides. While challenging, it is suited to all levels of ability.

Edna Paolo, manager of Malampa Department of Tourism Office, says the trail (and event) will be an opportunity for visitors to experience not only Malekula’s rugged and varied coastal and hinterland environments – but also the island’s rich cultural diversity, so signatory to this island in the Malampa Province.

“It’s an opportunity for visitors to experience the Kastom of the Big Nambas and Smol Nambus tribes – their history and their day-to-day life – aspects of living on the outer islands that few visitors to Vanuatu rarely get to see.” Paolo says.

Steve Taylor, an Australian volunteer with AVID (Australian Volunteers for International Development) is working with Malampa Department of Tourism and Malampa Travel in developing the cycle trail and event, says he is encouraged by the level of interest already coming in.

“While local expats are already signaling keen interest in participating in the event… Australian and New Zealand mountain bikers are also getting in touch with Malampa Travel – “Collar the Dog” is taking off!”
